چکیده
In the present study, heavy metal pollution and accumulation was investigated in an important mangrove plant, Avicennia officinalis grown in the polluted sites of Kanjurmarg creek, Mumbai. This creek is a location of discharge of influent and waste of some domestic industries. The analysis was done in leaves and stem of the plant as well as in water and soil for the heavy metals like Zinc ( Zn), Copper (Cu), Lead(Pb), Cadmium (Cd) and Arsenic (As) using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy to trace out the extent of their deposition. The results obtained indicated the presence of Zn in exceeding limit of MLRL thereby alerting high environmental risk. Cu, Pb was detected below the permissible limit. Cadmium detected below the quantity MLRL level however; Arsenic was not detected in any sample. The bioaccumulation of Zn was estimated as 7.091 ppm in the stem. The leaf of Avicennia officinalis indicates 0.196 ppm quantity in the sample. The polluted soil showed 4.607 ppm of Zn content whereas in polluted water sample it was 0.002 ppm. No content of Cu and Pb were traced in the polluted water. The highest estimate for Cu was observed as 1.248 ppm in Stem, 0.034 ppm in the leaves and 1.618 ppm in polluted soil. The Pb content was 0.481 ppm in stem, 0.03 ppm in the leaves and 1.21ppm in polluted soil. From present studies it is confirm that Avicennia officinalis shows accumulation of Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd. The estimate of Zn indicated exceeding level of content when compared with MLRL (Maximum Level Recommended for Livestock) limit and rest of heavy metals below the MLRL. From study it is confirmed that heavy metal concentrations in the studied plant indicates toxic level of the food chain contamination related to Zinc. © 2015 Universal Research Publications. Mangroves in Sunderbans are being increasingly subjected to heavy metal pollution mostly due to their unique location as they receive pollutants both from upstream area of the Hoogly estuary and the sea. In the present study absorption, accumulation and partitioning of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd in Avicennia officinalis L. in Jharkhali was studied to ascertain the phytoremediation capacity of the ma...
متن کاملIon chromatographic and voltammetric determination of heavy metals in soils. Comparison with atomic emission spectroscopy
This work deals with the comparison between three analytical techniques for the total contents analysis of heavy metals in agricultural soils polluted by copper. The soils samples are digested to clear solutions using a mixture of perchloric and hydrofluoric acids. The metals studied are copper, lead, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, zinc and manganese. Soil solutions are complex matrices and the analy...

Heavy metals in textile wastewater represent a major environmental problem, and are a potential danger to human health when present on textiles. Furthermore, the presence of some metals influences the production of textiles. Heavy metals are often used as oxidizing agents, as metal complex dyes, dye stripping agents, fastness improvers, and finishers. Thus, they act as hazardous sources through...

The Gorgan Bay is an important ecosystem receiving discharge from their tributaries. In this study, concentration of Pb, Zn, Ni, Fe, Al, Cu and As was seasonally determined at 22 sampling points during 2012-2013.Sediment samples were collected using a Van Veen grab. The levels of heavy metals were determined by ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry) and AAS (Atomic Ab...
متن کاملLeaching of Heavy Metals from Contaminated Soils using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS)
The clean-up of soils contaminated with heavy metals is one of the most difficult tasks for environmental engineering. Heavy metals are highly persistent in soil and a number of techniques have been developed that aim to remove heavy metals from contaminated soil. A method has been adopted to evaluate dynamic leaching of metal contaminants from industrial soil samples obtained from textile indu...
